Extras

The addition of special ingredients—such as bee pollen, royal jelly, herbal extracts, flower essences, honey, or glycerin—will set your lotions apart. These ingredients contain vitamins, minerals, and enzymes beneficial to the skin. Add herbal tinctures in the water part of your recipes. Small amounts of these boosters, 1 teaspoon or less, will be sufficient to benefit creams or lotions.

Water and Oil

The basis of creams and lotions is water and oil, which you can mix and match to meet the needs of any skin type. The water portion of your recipe can be any one, or a combination, of the ingredients in the water list below; the same holds true for the oil list. Just be sure to maintain the proper proportion of water to oil in a recipe. All lotions and creams will become firmer as they cool, so it is easier to pour them into wide-mouth jars as soon as they are done. If you use a saturated oil, such as cocoa butter or coconut, the product will be even firmer when cold but will melt readily when applied to the skin.
